Dog food when you suspect allergies

Itchy dogs are not a brand puzzle you solve in a comments section. A real food trial is boring, long, and run with a vet.

By How To Stops desk

  1. Confirm it is food

Fleas, pollen, and infection itch the same way. A vet should see the skin before you throw out every bag in the house. Ear infections that keep returning are a clue, not a diagnosis.

  2. Run one diet, completely

A hydrolyzed or novel-protein diet only counts if there are no treats, table scraps, flavored medicines, or stolen cat food for the weeks your vet set. Mixing “just a dental chew” ruins the test.

  3. Be careful with boutique grain-free trends

Grain-free is not the same as hypoallergenic. Some dogs with heart disease have been linked, in FDA investigations, to certain boutique and grain-free diets. That is a reason to choose the food with your vet, not from a ranking widget.

  4. Judge skin, not the bag’s adjectives

“Holistic” and “ancestral” are not formulations. Write down itch scores weekly. If nothing changes on a strict trial, it may not be food.

Watch for this

  • Sudden face swelling or trouble breathing after a new food is an emergency.

When to get help

Start with a veterinarian, and a veterinary dermatologist if the first trial fails. This page is not a product ranking.
