Practical fixes for everyday problems

You cannot make a time machine

Physics does not owe you a DeLorean. Here is why a home time machine is not a project, and how to stop losing the hours you do have.

By How To Stops desk

  1. Retire the build

Nothing you can assemble from a microwave and a forum will move you in time. Relativity allows strange behavior near light speed and gravity, on scales no hobby project reaches. Anyone selling parts for a time machine is selling a story.

  2. Keep the useful question

The wish usually shows up when a stretch of life feels misspent. That problem is real and local: sleep, a calendar with one less obligation, and a phone that does not eat the evening.

  3. Spend the weekend you would have spent on the prop

Write the apology, book the appointment, or finish the small thing you keep time-traveling away from. It will not rewrite last year. It does change next month, which is the only direction on offer.

Watch for this

  • Nostalgia spirals and “if only” research tabs are the hobby version of the time machine.

When to get help

If the urge to escape your actual life is heavy most days, talk to someone. In the US and Canada, 988 will pick up.

How to stop repeating yourself

People miss the first telling when it was vague, verbal, and easy to dodge. Write the decision down, ask them to say it back, and stop adding new versions.
