How to stop feeling sad all the time

Sadness is not a leak to seal. Persistent low mood is worth treating. Never feeling anything is not the goal.

By How To Stops desk

  1. Separate a hard week from a stuck season

Grief, a bad month, and ordinary disappointment are allowed to feel bad. Low mood most of the day, most days, for more than two weeks — plus sleep, appetite, or hope taking a hit — is the pattern to take to a professional.

  2. Put three anchors on the calendar

Daylight in the first hour you are up, a walk you do not negotiate with, and one person you actually talk to. These are supports, not a cure you failed if Tuesday is still heavy.

  3. Shrink the day

When everything feels pointless, a full self-improvement plan is another way to feel behind. One meal, one shower, one message. Leave the identity reboot for a week when your brain has more fuel.

  4. Get a real evaluation

Primary care can check thyroid, anemia, sleep, and medication side effects, and can refer you for therapy or discuss treatment. You do not have to arrive with the right words.

Watch for this

  • Numbing every feeling on purpose, with alcohol or otherwise, tends to make the low mood longer.
  • Thoughts of suicide or of harming yourself are a reason to get help now, not a reason to finish the article.

When to get help

In the US and Canada, call or text 988. If you are in immediate danger, call local emergency services. Elsewhere, a local crisis line or the emergency department is the right door.
