How to stop leg cramps immediately
A calf cramp wants the muscle lengthened. Stretch first, then sort out why it keeps visiting at 2 a.m.

Lengthen the cramped muscle
For the calf, stand and press the heel down with the knee soft, or sit and pull the toes toward you. Hold through the release instead of bouncing.
Walk it out
A minute of easy walking resets the muscle better than rubbing harder and harder. If you are in bed, flex and point the foot slowly once the knot lets go.
Check the usual triggers
Tight sheets that point the toes, a hard workout without a cooldown, and long periods of sitting all show up in night cramps. Loosen the bedding and stretch before lights out.
Don’t self-prescribe minerals
Extra magnesium or potassium helps some people and bothers others, especially with kidney disease. Ask a clinician before you start a supplement for cramps.
Watch for this
- A hot, swollen, one-sided calf can be a clot, not a cramp.
- Cramps with new weakness, or cramps that start on a medication, belong in a visit.
When to get help
See a clinician if cramps are new, nightly, or paired with swelling, numbness, or shortness of breath.
