How to get slime out of clothes

Slime is glue plus water plus glitter with opinions. Scrape it cold, loosen the polymer, and do not bake it in the dryer.

By How To Stops desk

  1. Scrape while it is still a solid

A butter knife or an old loyalty card, worked from the edge, gets more off than a rinse that liquefies it into the fibers. Let a wet glob chill in the fridge for a few minutes if it is smearing.

  2. Loosen what is left

White vinegar or a drop of dish soap in warm water breaks a lot of craft slime. Work it in, wait, then rinse. Oil can help a sticky residue and then itself needs soap.

  3. Wash cool, and check before heat

Machine-wash on a cool cycle once the bulk is gone. If you still see glitter glue, wash again. Heat sets what you missed.

Watch for this

  • Test vinegar on bright dyes. Some costumes are not washable at all — blot those, don’t soak.

When to get help

A dry cleaner if the garment’s label says so, or if the slime was the borax-and-glue kind soaked into wool.
